Musa’s relative jailed for ‘identity’ issue

There has been no official request from Manila to deport Manuel K Amalilio, suspected of scamming 15,000 Filipinos of RM859 million.

KOTA KINABALU: Mohammad Kamal Said aka Manuel K Amalilio, the fugitive wanted by the Philippine authority was yesterday charged with possessing a Philippine passport and sentenced to two years’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof imposed the sentence on Mohammad Kamal Sa’aid, 47, after he pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 12 (1) (d) of the Passport Act 1966 which is punishable by a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a jail term of up to two years or both, upon conviction.

The proceedings was held at a medical ward Queen Elizabeth Hospital One here, where the accused was admitted believed to be suffering a liver ailment.

The accused, who was defended by counsel Hairul Vaiyron Othman, was detained at Terminal Two of the Kota Kinabalu International on Jan 25, for committing the offence.

The charge stated that, Mohammad Kamal possessed the Philippine passport under the name of Amilillio Manuel Karingal bearing the numbers XX4025549 which he had obtained fraudulently.

The accused was ordered to serve his jail sentence from the date of his arrest on Jan 25 this year.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azwal Azman told the court that the accused was arrested by a police team and among items seized were his MyKad as well as his Philippine passport.

He said investigation by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department confirmed that he is a Malaysian in possession of a Philippine passport without legal authority.

Pleading for a light sentence, his counsel submitted that his client had no criminal record.

Hairul also said that Mohammad Kamal had regretted what he had done and requested for an appropriate sentence to be imposed on him.

No official request to deport

In reply, Azwal applied for a deterrent sentence taking into account that this case had involved Malaysia and the Philippine.

The magistrate also ordered the passport to be surrendered to the Immigration Department following an application by the prosecution for further action.

Mohammad Kamal became infamous overnight following his arrest by the police.

He is accused of being the mastermind of an investment scheme and had fled to Sabah from the Philippines after allegedly cheating 15,000 Filipinos of nearly 12 billion pesos (RM895 million) last November.

State Police Commissioner Hamza Taib revealed that the police had detained the accused in Ranau over “identity issues” and not the investment scam in the Philippines.

There had been no official request by Manila police to Bukit Aman to arrest Mohammad Kamal so far, said Hamza.

In November last year, the Philippine police launched a manhunt for the accused, purportedly a Malaysian from Sabah who went by a different name in the Philippines.

The accused, who allegedly told Filipino investors that he was related to several senior Sabah politicians including Chief Minister Musa Aman, was said to have operated a pyramid investment scheme under a company called Aman Future Group Philippines Inc, promising returns of up to 67%.

The victims had used their savings, mortgaged homes and borrowed to invest in the scheme.

Among those who lost money in the scheme are senior Philippines government officers and including President Benigno Aquino’s sister Kris who was said to have invested 50 million pesos in it. A family of 25 members reportedly lost a total of 150 million pesos, while another investor claimed to have lost 31 million pesos.

Musa’s ‘distant relative’

Many affected Filipinos have also been coming to Sabah to look for Mohammad Kamal.

Musa has admitted that Mohammad Kamal is a “distant relative” but denied that he had interfered in the Filipino’s repatriation.

“I have a large family and I have just recently been informed that this individual is a distant relative,” he was reported as saying in a statement on Sunday, adding that he learned about Mohamad Kamal “through the news”.

“Let me make it very clear that the Sabah state government did not and will not intervene in this matter. This is a police and Interpol matter…

“Whether or not Amalilio (Mohamad Kamal) is a relative, the authorities should investigate the matter and take the necessary action. No one is above the law,” he said, while expressing hopes that Malaysian and Filipino authorities would cooperate to resolve the matter quickly.

The Philippines media reported its Interior Secretary Mar Roxas as accusing Musa of blocking the extradition Mohammad Kamal while Philippine Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the accused was whisked away by the Malaysian authorities 10 minutes before he was to board a flight to the Philippines.

And he has been arrested.

Tamat dah cerita lapuk.

Anonymous said...

Yeah merely identity issue.

Anonymous said...

the opposition coalition is seen to be hitting a dead end especially when their budget was criticized as it was not done based on reality and they kept on making irrelevant promises.

Anonymous said...

As BN manages to prove its performance through execellent service, the opposition had no other choice but to kept on playing with small issues such as AES cameras and cigarette tax which both provide good impact to rakyat

Anonymous said...

Opposition tried to tell rakyat that the government is desperate for money and that is why they are taking a lot of rakyat's money.

Anonymous said...

However, this World Bank Report has proven that the government has never became desperate in generating income for the country.

Anonymous said...

It has been proven that the government has managed to provide such comfortable environment for businesses to bloom as well as increasing investments to ensure that the country's finance could be generated consistently.

Anonymous said...

It has been done.

Anonymous said...

Rakyat are getting more and more convinced with the government and the opposition is beginning to lose points for their campaign.

Anonymous said...

It has been solved even more.

Anonymous said...

Sudah tangkap sudah la ba, mau lagi bising ka?

Anonymous said...

In Dewan Rakyat, the oppositions keep picking up the weaknesses in the AG’s Report, trying to nail down anything that could stick but this time around, they could not find any thus far.

Anonymous said...

The police have been making huge efforts to nab the accused.

Anonymous said...

what is interesting here is that these PR groups do not even deny that SUARAM was sponsored by a foreign fund.

Anonymous said...

Instead, they defended the matter with the excuse that even the government receives foreign fund ???

Anonymous said...

This excuse shows how desperate they are to defend SUARAM.

Anonymous said...

They could still try to picture government's 'fear', but rakyat are aware of who is afraid and who is not.

Anonymous said...

The ones who are scared are the ones who are anxious, kept on spinning the story, making statuory declaration and taking it back, writing every single detail and later denied things which they have written.

Anonymous said...

the scared ones are the ones who had to fled to other countries and refuses to face the country's court even though they have concrete evidence to confirm the story.

Anonymous said...

with the links between SUARAM and foreign fund getting more and more obvious, their fear rises, and they would try hard to belittle the foreign fund which they are receiving.

Anonymous said...

If PR is not involved with foreign agent, why would they need to defend foreign agents such as SUARAM ???

Anonymous said...

Why can't they relate the fact that accepting foreign fund would bring the meaning that one is a foreign agent ???

The answer is, SUARAM is PR.

Anonymous said...

Amat pantas sekali.

Anonymous said...

Musa is not even involved.

Anonymous said...

Yang penting dia sudah dlm penjara.

Anonymous said...

Express your thoughts

Anonymous said...

Wait and see.

Anonymous said...

We know who is the main culprit.

Anonymous said...

Why it has to do with Musa?

Anonymous said...

Just because the guy is his distant relative, it doesn't mean that Musa is all involved.

After all, he is our leader.

Now that he has been arrested, this should not be an issue anymore.

This issue has always been a police and Interpol matter. Musa has no business to interfere even though Manuel is his distant relative.

Anonymous said...

The opposition seem to love to associate Musa aman with anything negative.

Having him put to jail is much better than having him deported.

We must not let the opposition to influence our mind into believing them 100%.. This is the opposition strategy to cover up the achievement that has been done by the government towards sabah. We must not forget that the government has brought so much positive changes in sabah.

Musa Aman has already provided an explanation to this case, what more does the opposition want?

Lest complications arise in the government’s bid to have Manuel Amalilio deported to the country, the Department of Justice is ignoring reports that the man behind a P12-billion investment scam is related to Sabah’s chief minister.

Anonymous said...

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima insisted Amalilio, whose return from Malaysia was aborted at the last minute last month, was a Filipino and said she did “not want to be dwelling” on reports he was related to a top official of Sabah, where he had fled since last year to escape prosecution.

Anonymous said...

“I hope that you understand that my only mission, our only mission in so far as the Philippine authorities are concerned as directed by the President is to ensure the return of Mr. Amalilio here by whatever means legally possible and according to the principles of comity and reciprocity under international law because the Philippines and Malaysia are friendly nations,” she told reporters.

Anonymous said...

The justice secretary said her office would not want to be dragged into controversies that “might complicate” things.

Anonymous said...

She stressed the documents on Amalilio’s Filipino citizenship came from official sources and therefore, “there is a presumption of validity, of genuineness.”

Anonymous said...

De Lima also made it clear Amalilio’s nationality had never been an issue when authorities first coordinated for his deportation with their counterparts in Malaysia.

Anonymous said...

The justice secretary said that reports on Amalilio’s impending deportation had elicited the interest of some people. She did not elaborate.

Anonymous said...

“We assure the people that we are taking steps and efforts towards that end of making sure that he faces the bar of justice before the Philippine justice system,” she said.

Anonymous said...

Most of Amalilio’s co-accused in syndicated estafa cases filed in connection with the Aman pyramid scam are now in the custody of the National Bureau of Investigation.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile, the panel of special prosecutors tasked to handle the Aman cases have started preliminary investigation hearings on complaints filed against Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co. But Co and his lawyer did not show up in the first hearing on Jan. 30 held at the DOJ, according to Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Edna Valenzuela, who heads the special team of prosecutors.

Anonymous said...

Valenzuela said they have scheduled two more PI hearings on Feb. 7 and 13.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happens, this is not even Musa's case.

The Most Reliable way To Predict The Future Is To Create It.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Pembangkang bagaikan penjual ubat dijalanan atau tamu-tamu besar, menggunakan loud speaker memuji ubat yang ditawarkan kononnya mujarab mengubati semua penyakit; seperti kata P.Ramlee, tersalah makan ubat, maka maut.

Anonymous said...

Kerajaan berjanji membina rumah PPRT diberikan. Kerajaan berjanji membina jalan raya diberikan.

Anonymous said...

Kerajaan berjanji menubuhkan RCI Pati di Sabah diberikan. Kerajaan berjanji menghapuskan ISA diberikan.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Pepatah mengatakan JANGAN CURAHKAN AIR DI TEMPAYAN APABILA MENDEGAR GURUH DI LANGIT kerana hujan belum pasti datang.

OPPOSITIONS OHHH PEMBANGKANG

Pembangkang Jadi Kera Sumbang Sambut Merdeka Berasingan

IT IS POLICE AND INTERPOL ISSUE, WHY MUST BE TRYING TO RELATE WITH MUSA? WANT TO PSYCHO PEOPLE?

OPPOSITIONS OHHH PEMBANGKANG

Pembangkang Jadi Kera Sumbang Sambut Merdeka Berasingan

De Lima maintains: Amalilio is Filipino, not Malaysian

MANILA, Philippines—Justice Secretary Leila De Lima reiterated Wednesday that Aman Futures Group founder Manuel Amalilio is a Filipino and not a Malaysian, Radyo Inquirer 990AM reported.

Amalilio has a legitimate Philippine passport and birth certificate from the National Statistics Office, De Lima said.
She dismissed rumors that Amalilio is a Malaysian, saying this would not affect pending cases filed against the leader of the P12-billion investment scam.

But De Lima refused to comment on reports that Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman is a relative of Amalilio and was the one who blocked the deportation of Amalilio from Malaysia.

Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Eduardo Malaya has said that a Malaysian court ordered the imprisonment of Amalilio for two years for carrying a fake Philippine passport.
