KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 – Gerakan President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon finally relented today and accepted the resignation of his predecessor Tun Dr Lim Keng Yaik as party adviser.
Dr Koh explained in a statement this evening that his decision had come after his meeting with the former Cabinet minister this afternoon.
“After deliberation, I decided to accept Lim’s resignation as the Gerakan adviser. We met this afternoon to discuss many matters about the party and the country,” he said.
Dr Koh also announced that he had invited Lim, who is still a lifelong member in the party, to preside as chairman in the Gerakan Life Members Council on his behalf.
“I have also decided that Tun Lim will play a different role in the party. He has graciously accepted,” he said.
In his attempt to re-unite Gerakan’s seemingly fractured leadership, Dr Koh also called on all members at all levels to close ranks in the “satu hati spirit” (spirit of unity) and focus on serving the people.
Dr Koh’s decision comes barely a day after he announced that the party’s central leadership would not accept Lim’s resignation.
Lim dropped a bombshell on Monday when he announced his sudden decision to quit as party adviser, citing his dissatisfaction with Dr Koh’s leadership.
The former Beruas MP accused Dr Koh of being too afraid to resolve internal party conflicts, referring to the ongoing Penang Gerakan leadership crisis.
A group of members in the party’s northern stronghold of Penang recently succeeded in their bid to summon an extraordinary general meeting this Sunday where they plan to remove their state chief Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.
Dr Koh came under fire from Lim when he announced that he would not attend the EGM and would instead honour his promise to be present at the MCA annual general meeting, slotted for the same day.
