Exco slams 'brutal murder' of brutal murder suspects' dogs

By Rahmah Ghazali - Free Malaysia Today

SHAH ALAM: The state government today expressed its disappointment over the killing of nine pedigree dogs belonging to the suspects in the murder case of cosmetics millionaire Sosilawati Lawiya and three others.

Speaking to reporters after an exco meeting, state exco Ronnie Liu said a new guideline would be introduced to prevent such incidents from recurring.

He said it was unacceptable for the police and the Kuala Langat District Council to kill the dogs with high-dosage tranquilisers.

“I was surprised and saddened to hear that the dogs were killed. The dogs should have been injected with low-dosage tranquilisers and moved to animal shelters insead,” he added.

It was reported last Sunday that six Rottweilers, two Dalmatians and a bulldog were put to sleep by the council because they were aggressive and going after the poultry and livestock in the farm.

However, the killing did not go down well with animal activists, who said that the council should not have acted on its own without informing the Veterinary Services Department and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Liu said the state government would come up with the guidelines within two weeks.

“The guidelines will include issuance of compounds to owners who are irresponsible and negligent in caring for their pets.

“This will also ensure that such ‘brutal murder’ never happens again and also prevent the abuse of power by some individuals,” he said.
