Kayveas: Uncouth acts to oust Samy Vellu not right

KUALA LUMPUR: People's Progressive Party (PPP) president Datuk M. Kayveas has hit out at the MIC members who are trying to push out president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu ahead of his retirement schedule.

He said Samy Vellu's critics and organisers of the Gerakan Anti Samy Vellu (GAS) had resorted to an improper channel to remove the MIC supremo.

"The right time and forum to remove someone is through the election process, either talk him out of contesting or vote him out. That would be a more civilised option," Kayveas told the New Straits Times after chairing the PPP supreme council member meeting yesterday.

"Instead, these people had, during those elections, asked, pressured and coaxed Samy Vellu to stay on as the president but when they did not get what they wanted, they turned into sour grapes."

Kayveas said the actions of these critics did not reflect their sincerity.

"Making statements against someone or talking about their shortcomings is one thing, but putting their picture up and hitting it with slippers is another thing."

"One showed freedom to speak but the other showed lack of discipline and character," he said, referring to an incident where an MIC man had hit Samy Vellu's photo with slippers during the GAS rally last week.

"Although there is no love lost between me and Samy Vellu, I do not accept or condone such acts to remove him.

"I don't want to be part of the uncultured and uncouth manner, although there were many invitations for me to join the move."

Kayveas said the decision lay with Samy Vellu himself, whether to give in to the pressure and leave now or stay on and risk being made to leave.

Earlier, at a press conference, Kayveas thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for appointing PPP senior vice-president Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz as the deputy minister of information, communications and culture.

He said he hoped that Maglin would work closely with the party leadership and state chairmen in keeping the party united.

Kayveas also announced that Najib will be officiating PPP's general assembly on June 19 at the Putra World Trade Centre.
