Review Salary Of Civil Servants - Cuepacs

PENANG, April 14 (Bernama) -- Cuepacs president Omar Osman has urged the government to review the salary of civil servants to strengthen the public sector.

He said Cuepacs was preparing a memorandum calling for salary review in line with the New Economic Model (NEM) and hopes to send it in one or two months.

"We are at final stage of preparing the memorandum as our last revision was about four years ago," he told reporters at a Cuepacs national seminar for young leaders here Wednesday.

Omar also said civil servants who apply for optional retirement could still receive full gratuity if they have good reasons like failing health problem and to settle debts.

However, they have to get approval from the Public Service Department (PSD).

"If the reasons cited are unreasonable, the conditions stated in the circular will apply.

"This means that they will only receive 20 percent of gratuity or RM10,000 or which is higher."

He added PSD assured that it was only a short term measure and would revert to the old conditions when the economy recovers.

Financial constrain prompted PSD to tighten the optional retirement of civil servants starting Feb 1.

It was also to avoid shortage of skilled officers for the government transformation programme (GTP).

New conditions imposed include asking civil servants to receive only 20 percent of gratuity or RM10,000 or which is higher as oppose to lump sum payment.
