People's Pulse Will Determine BN Candidate In Hulu Selangor

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he would use the pulse of the people to pick the candidate suitable for the by-election for the Hulu Selangor Parliamentary seat.

"We have to carry out a study beforehand. That's why I cannot answer the question now. We have to scrutinise, feel the pulse of the people and so on," he told reporters at the Senate lobby, here Monday.

The Prime Minister said this when asked to comment on the most suitable candidate to represent the BN in the by-election for the Hulu Selangor Parliamentary seat.

On the suggestion by Selangor Umno which plans to nominate former Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhamad Taib, Najib said he needed some time to make the right decision.

"I have to study all developments. What is important is victory for the BN and this is what I emphasise on," he said.

The Hulu Selangor Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent MP Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) due to brain cancer on Thursday.

In the 12th general election in March 2008, Dr Zainal Abidin won the seat with a narrow majority of 198 votes over the BN candidate, Datuk G. Palanivel.

When asked to comment on the intention of all the 36 committee members of the Bukit Bendera Umno division to resign, Najib said he would have to ask the Umno Management Committee to study the latest developments.

"Whatever it is, the Party Constitution must be complied with. I want the Umno Management Committee to study the latest developments," he said.

All the Bukit Bendera Umno division committee members announced at a media conference Monday that they would submit their resignation letters to the State Umno Liaison Committee which is expected to meet in the third week of next month to enable a special delegates meeting of the division to be held to reappoint Datuk Ahmad Ismail as the division head.

Ahmad's party membership was suspended for three years from September 2008 following public criticism following the sensitive statement he made during the by-election for the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary seat.

In December last year, the Umno Supreme Council decided to withdraw Ahmad's suspension over the statement.
