KEADILAN To Name Candidate With Best Chance Of Winning

–PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–
29th March 2010

KEADILAN will name the candidate it views as having the best chance of winning

1. In the last few days, I have been receiving many calls from the media as to who Parti Keadilan Rakyat will name as the candidate for the Parliamentary By-election for the seat of Hulu Selangor. A media report of my views in the Malaysian Insider has created some confusion which needs to be clarified.

2.I wish to reiterate, for the avoidance of any doubt, that the fundamental principle applied by the Party, especially in the context of a key by-election, is that the named candidate is thought to have the best chance of winning the seat.

3. In deciding that, the Party will take into account various factors including his/her background, his/her experience and qualifications, the demography of the voters, the particular characteristics of the constituency, the views of coalition partners and all other relevant factors. No one of these factors by itself determines who the candidate should be. The ultimate test is whether that particular candidate has the best chance of winning amongst all of those considered.

4. In a general election where many candidates are fielded in a large number of seats, ensuring that the candidates of the party also represent all communities and races and backgrounds in reasonable and fair proportions also becomes a key factor in consideration besides those already named above.

4. It is also the practice of the Party that party leaders do not discuss the merits and demerits of any particular candidate in the public domain, and any views expressed would be their personal views and not those of the party. Selection of a candidate is an internal matter for the party.

5. The final decision for selection of a candidate is vested in the Majlis PImpinan Pusat of the Party unless delegated to the Political Bureau or specific leaders of the Party. No candidate can ultimately contest without a signed warrant from the Party President.
