Several former leaders of Hindraf, a movement now banned by the Malaysian government have declared that they would not joined the newly formed Malaysian Makkal Sakthi Party (MMSP) and criticised former Hindraf coordinator R.S.Thanenthran for colluding with the leadership of Barisan Nasional in hijacking the term “Makkal Sakthi”.
Former ISA detainees Vasanthakumar and Ganapathy Rao and Perak State Assemblyman lawyer V.Sivanesan together with several other Hindraf leaders declared that they would not be joining the new party headed by former Hindraf coordinator R.S.Thanenthran.
How Hindraf was born....
Tracing back the history of Hindraf they said that Hindraf was born out of the efforts of lawyers like Manogaran Malayalam, R.Sivanesan, M.Kulasegaran, and Gengatharan who were fighting for the rights of the Mt Everest climber Moorthy whose religious identity became a tussle upon his death.
“Later Hindraf grew into a powerful movement when the Sri Maha Mariamman temple was broken in Padang Jawa, Selangor. That is when the slogan “Makkal Sakthi” became the Manthra for the movement. When the five key leaders of Hindraf were detained under ISA, Thanenthran took the responsibility of Coordinator for Hindraf. But now he is breaking up Hindraf and hijacking the Makkal Sakthi slogan by registering a political party with himself as its leader. He was able to register the party within two weeks” alleged Vasanthakumar and Ganapathy Rao.
Makkal Sakthi party will fail...
They also claimed that only those who are close to Thanenthran will join MMSP and no other Hindraf leaders or supporters would be joining the party. They questioned the need for MMSP when there are already too many parties for Indians and predicted that the party will not earn the support of Indian community and ultimately would fail.
V.Sivanesan, a lawyer and the former Perak EXCO member from DAP said that Thanenthran criticised BN during the last general election and even campaigned for him, but now it is a mockery that the same Thanenthran is supporting BN by starting a party for himself for his own self-interests.
