Buy 1Malaysia, RM 30 a pop

by Nathaniel Tan

Well, I reckon 1Malaysia is flawed in implementation and sincerity, but perhaps not in concept.

Nonetheless, I thought this was pretty funny:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak launched his highly-publicised “1 Malaysia” concept before a crowd of at least 30,000 at the Perak Stadium here last night.

But according to some spectators, they had been bused in after collecting RM30 coupons.

One member of the public, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Malaysian Insider that all he needed to do was to register his name at the location (his was in Sungai Siput), get his coupon and redeem it at a counter outside the stadium for RM30.

Ah, but the really funny part:

Najib congratulated the large crowd at the stadium for their attendance and said:

You are not here because you were forced to. Your presence is out of the sincerity of your heart and your willingness to show support to 1 Malaysia.

“As I entered this stadium, I was extremely proud to see this place packed with the people of 1 Malaysia. I waved my flag and I saw in every corner of this stadium, people from all walks of life, people of different races and cultures.”

It’s starting to be pretty typical of Najib (especially in Perak), thinking that he can buy anything, even the truth :P

Oh, and what did this cost the rakyat? Let’s be super generous and say only 20,000 people were bought (as I recall, BN ceramahs are closer to the 200 range, on their good days).

That makes RM 600,000. If they bought all 30,000, that’s almost a cool million, just so that Najib can syiok sendiri, pretend to be a Pakatan leader and see what it’s like to have a crowd for once.

As for legitimisation of his takeover? All he can manage is “It’s legal what?! And they started it!”

LAME

Legal or not *might* arguably be debatable, but only one type of government is legitimate, friend: A democratically elected
