KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- Only one MCA extraordinary general meeting (EGM) is to be held and the date of the EGM will be announced on Wednesday, MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng said on Monday.
He had earlier chaired an EGM coordination meeting for four hours, which was attended by three representatives of party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and three of sacked deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Representing Ong were Datuk Chai Kim Sen, Gan Ping Sieu and Simon Lim while the three requisitionists of the EGM, Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho, Loh Seng Kok and Datuk Chong Itt Chew represented Dr Chua.
"The meeting was conducted amicably where both sides engaged in very fruitful discussions towards holding one joint EGM," Wong told a news conference at the party headquarters, here.
"To achieve that end (one EGM), the party president agreed to adopt in toto the motions proposed by the requisitionists -- all five motions proposed and presented by Tan, Loh and Chong last Friday," Wong said.
The proposed resolutions submitted by Dr Chuas supporters are:
* that the members of the general assembly have no confidence in the leadership of Ong;
* that the presidential councils decision on Aug 26 in accepting the recommendation of the disciplinary board and the subsequent decision of the central committee to expel or suspend Dr Chua is annulled;
* Dr Chua be rightfully restored as deputy president of the MCA;
* that the appointment made by the central committee, including that of the deputy president of MCA, be revoked; and
* that there shall be no disciplinary action taken against any or all of the requisitionists by the disciplinary board, the central committee or the presidential council.
Wong said Ong also agreed to drop his only motion, which was to table a vote of confidence in his (Ong's) leadership and to endorse the MCA presidential council's decision on the disciplinary action against Dr Chua.
He said the merged EGM shall convene in accordance with Article 30.1 and Article 30.3 of the party constitution.
In the best interests of the party, the meeting unanimously agreed to exclude debates and speeches during the EGM, he said, adding that both sides also agreed to appoint one chief scrutineer and eight other scrutineers, respectively.
Wong said the meeting also agreed that there shall not be any election of speakers for the purpose of the EGM and the present speaker, Datuk Yik Phooi Hong, shall conduct the EGM while Hoo Seng Chang and Datin Paduka Lee Pit Chern would be the deputy speakers.
"It is agreed that I will decide on the date of the EGM and inform representatives from both side and I will send out the notice of the EGM on Sept 16 (Wednesday) pursuant to Article 30.1 and 30.3 of the party constitution," he said.
Tan expressed gratitude to Wong for the meeting held today, saying both sides were happy after the long discussions.
The turmoil in MCA erupted when Dr Chua was sacked on Aug 26 by the party's disciplinary board because of his 2007 sex video scandal.
On Aug 31, Ong directed an EGM to be convened to discuss issues relating to the sacking of Dr Chua, the Port Klang Free Zone project and others matters.
Dr Chua himself had called for an EGM.
Ong, commenting on his blog www.ongteekeat.net, said he did not want to dwell too much on the legal and technical aspects as it was imperative that only one EGM be held as soon as possible so that the party could move forward.
"As the party president, I do not want to see the party further divided and it is my wish that MCA members close ranks as swiftly as possible and continue with the reform agenda in the run-up to the 13th general election," he said.
Ong said he also believed that at the end of the day, the MCA delegates' maturity and wisdom would prevail and that they would put MCA's interest above all else.
