KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Former Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Tan Sri Isa Abdul Samad is the "best choice" for Barisan Nasional (BN) to retain the Bagan Pinang state constituency in Negeri Sembilan in the Oct 11 by-election, MIC president Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu said on Tuesday.
"We are very happy with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's) decision to pick Tan Sri Isa," he said in a statement here today and added that the party was confident that the voters would turn out in full force on polling day to cast their vote for Isa who is "a well-liked and humble person."
Samy Vellu said the MIC had camped in Bagan Pinang for the past two weeks, and "we will now enter stage two of our work in Bagan Pinang, and I can say that Indian voters will vote for Tan Sri Isa."
In PORT DICKSON, Home Minister and Umno vice president Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein said Isa was the right candidate for the seat.
"His candidature is in line with the wishes of the people in the constituency. It is also in line with the BN's policy that the people come first," he told reporters after Isa was announced as the candidate for the by-election here.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan concurred saying Isa was well-liked by the people in Bagan Pinang and would easily garner the support of voters there.
UMNO information chief Ahmad Maslan said Isa was the right choice as he was a popular figure in Port Dickson having had about 30 years of experience serving as an elected representative of the people of the state.
Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon said the the 1Malaysia concept espoused by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was being translated on the ground by picking Isa as the BN's candidate for Bagan Pinang.
The man-in-the-street also voiced similar views saying Isa's popularity wound ensure a BN victory in the by-election.
An estate labourer, K. Sagesaran, 46, said he was confident Isa would win as he was a "people's leader".
A trader Ahmad Shuib Masran, 36, said Isa was the best choice for the BN for the seat while David Lee, 34, the manager of a hotel, said Isa would get broad support from the Indian and Chinese communities as he was a popular figure among them.
