State Leaders Welcome Najib's Decision

PENANG, May 18 (Bernama) -- Penang political leaders Monday welcomed Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's decision not to field a candidate in the Penanti state assembly by-election on May 31.

Gerakan vice-president, Huan Cheng Guan, said it was a wise decision.

"The Penanti by-election is a created one and not due to the death of an assemblyman and the BN should not follow the Opposition's tune," he told Bernama here.

The move (by the Opposition), he said, brought losses to the people as by-elections cost a lot besides creating an unpleasant atmosphere among supporters of contesting parties.

"In nine months, there were two by-elections beginning with Permatang Pauh when Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail very easily gave up her seat to her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim even though she was healthy," he said.

State Umno liaison committee secretary, Datuk Azhar Ibrahim, said the state supported and respected the decision.

The Penanti seat was vacated by Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin on March 19.

In JOHOR BAHARU, Umno Information chief, Ahmad Maslan said: "The move by BN not to contest is wise as we do not want to dance to the Opposition's tune as it is a waste of the people's money like expenses for the Election Commission (EC), the police and the like."

"A waste of time, energy and bringing hardship to the people, falsehoods and playing with the people's mandate. We have many more important national agendas," he told Bernama.

Ahmad, who is also a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and Pontian MP, said the tactics of the Opposition were the same as in by-elections in Bukit Selambau and Permatang Pauh earlier.

The BN, he said, did not fear the Opposition in elections but the series of resignations to have by-elections on trivial grounds must stop.

"We are confident that the people will be disgusted and weary of these political games," said Ahmad.
