Muhyiddin To Convey Sikh Community's Requests To PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today gave his assurance to the Sikh community that their four requests would be conveyed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

"I promise I will do this, and I believe the prime minister is generous and will consider the community's requests."

The deputy prime minister said this in his speech at the Vasakhi Charity Dinner 2009 organised by the Federation of Punjabi Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Malaysia.

Earlier, the federation president Datuk Daljit Singh Dalliwal had requested that the government make Vasakhi a national celebration, and provide financial assistance to Sikh students to further their studies and to Sikh non-governmental organisations, and more economic opportunities for Sikhs.

The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, was the guest-of-honour at the function, which was also attended by Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

Earlier, elaborating the concept of 1Malaysia in his speech, Muhyiddin said trust and mutual respect were vital ingredients to achieve such a notion.

"We will make 1Malaysia a reality. It helps Malaysia to stand tall and all of us stand side by side to achieve excellence. I am sure that commitment from us all will help achieve this.

"We pledge that no one will be left behind. I ask you all to support 1Malaysia (concept) as a strategic asset rather than just a symbol," he said.

Muhyiddin said Malaysian society had become fragmented lately due to dissatisfaction of certain quarters which felt that they had been neglected and were thus unhappy with the government.

He said this was also because of the global economic crisis which had caused hardship to the people.

Therefore, he said, the government was seeking continuous improvement by regularly assessing its performance to ensure that no one would be left behind.
