Anwar asks govt officials to maintain professional ethics

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 March 2009: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged federal and state government officials to carry out their responsibilities in accordance with their professional code of ethics.

They should not allow themselves to be made use of by political parties, he said.

When debating the Supplementary Supply Bill 2009 at the committee level in the Dewan Rakyat, the Permatang Pauh MP from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) said there were high-ranking government officials who had to bow to the demands of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Anwar also questioned the security level at Menara Dato' Onn, Putra World Trade Centre following the discovery of "strange items" under the Umno president's table, as reported by a Chinese newspaper.

"How could anyone have breached the tight security at PWTC? And the items were only found under the prime minister's (Umno president) table and not that of others, including the deputy prime minister (Umno deputy president) and party secretary-general," he said.

According to the newspaper report today, two sheets of paper with Jawi writing and a piece of wood wrapped with white paper were found placed under the party president's table at Level 39 of Menara Dato' Onn. — Bernama
