Azmi Sharom next up for sedition charge

Law lecturer to be charged in court over seditious article he wrote on the Selangor Menteri Besar crisis.

KUALA LUMPUR: University of Malaya law lecturer Azmi Sharom is to face charges of sedition tomorrow for a piece he wrote on Aug 14 in news portal The Malay Mail Online, giving his thoughts about the Selangor Menteri Besar crisis.

Dang Wangi police have confirmed that Azmi will be charged under Section 4 (1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948 at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.

If he is found guilty, Azmi will have to pay a fine not exceeding RM5,000 if it is a first time offence or face a maximum of five years imprisonment for subsequent offences.

Azmi now joins the ranks of a string of others to be slapped with sedition charges in the past month, all of whom are politicians, with the exception of himself.

The weeks leading up to Merdeka Day saw Rafizi Ramli, N Surendran and Khalid Samad among many others charged in court for various remarks they made deemed seditious by Putrajaya.
