Its chairperson, Syis Abdul Kadir (left in photo), said we are undeterred and will return to the Pekan constituency.
“We are unperturbed... We retreated from Pekan because we do not want to quarrel with them and we are following the correct procedure, including lodging police reports. It is up to the authorities to investigate.
“We will return there for phase two when parliament is dissolved. Our stand is the same, and it has not changed. We will announce our candidate during nomination day,” he said in a press conference after handing over a memorandum and evidence of the attacks they faced to the police in Bukit Aman this morning.
Eight students accompanied Syis in handing over the memorandum, which included pictures of 16 individuals who were alleged to have attacked them.
A representative of the Bukit Aman corporate communications division, ASP N Kavetha, received the memorandum.
It was reported that the university students faced a spate of attacks and intimidation from unidentified individuals when they distributed leaflets to Pekan residents.
These include some youths had allegedly pulled the tudung (headscarves) of the female students while they were distributing leaflets.
The leaflets state the students’ intention to contest in the general election and wanted voters to evaluate BN’s actions.
“There is nothing wrong in trying out a new government... If the new leadership does not perform to the people’s expectations, then the people can choose BN,” the letter reads.
Syis has asked the authorities to conduct immediate investigations following the evidence which was handed over to them.
“I hope the police will investigate the violence on the university students immediately. The local residents do not have a problem with us but we faced problems when we were in Pekan town, when some of them are seen coming out from the Pekan Umno headquarters,” he alleged.
