PUTRAJAYA, Jan 7 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today the decision to allow tomorrow’s protest at the Kampung Baru mosque in Kuala Lumpur over the “Allah” controversy was up to the Home Ministry.

"It is up to the ministry concerned to allow the protest, but it has to be guided by rules. It (the protest) is subject to the approval by the authorities concerned," said Muhyiddin.

He explained that the protestors can go ahead with the protest but they had to abide by the rules.

"They would have to obtain a permit. The protest cannot threaten the people's safety.

"It cannot escape the laws of the land, and it has to be done within the limits of the law."

It is understood that the protest is being orchestrated by several Muslim NGOs in retaliation against the High Court's ruling on Dec 31 allowing the Catholic Church to use the word "Allah" in its weekly publication the Herald.

On Monday, the Home Ministry had filed an appeal against the High Court decision and subsequently obtained a stay of execution.
