The anti-graft agency, which has been under fire over its procedures since the death of witness Teoh Beng Hock, is also studying the possibility of recording on video all interviews of witnesses and suspects.
Currently, the MACC only makes audio recordings.
“I understand these two aspects are being considered by MACC,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said when met in Parliament today.
It is understood that the proposals for lawyers to be present and to introduce video recordings are part of reforms being considered following Teoh’s mysterious death earlier this year, which is still being investigated by a Coroner’s Court.
Nazri said today that the two new approaches being considered could be very useful if incidents such as Teoh’s death happened again.
“It can be used as evidence by all parties,” he said.
Commenting on the Court of Appeal’s decision earlier today to once again allow the questioning of witnesses outside office hours, the minister said he was not surprised by the decision.
He contended that the law allowed MACC to conduct questioning throughout the day because the agency’s duties were considered a “24-hours service.”
“I am satisfied with the decision of the court,” he said.
