Najib Understands What Needs To Be Done - Rais

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the opposition will not have much opportunity to exploit whatever weaknesses Umno may have following the changes that Umno will be making.

Rais, who is also a member of the Umno Supreme Council, described Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as a leader who understood what needed to be done.

"And getting the confidence (to initiate changes) has already been implanted which will facilitate the process," he told reporters after the conclusion of the Umno general assembly 2009, here on Friday.

He said this when asked to comment on Najib's winding up speech which was full of inspiration to turn Umno into a party that was the champion of the people.

In this context, he said all the party's machinery would be organised to draw up the necessary programmes so that the people in the urban and rural areas would feel that all government policies had been realised and could see the changes taking place.

"The changes are in the form of welfare, education, food living allowance and agriculture subsidy. If they see all these, the policies formulated by the government will then be felt," he said.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin described Najib's speech not only as an inspiration to the Umno members but also as a directive.

"It is actually a directive too so that we will work from now. All the plans and intentions have been conveyed and interpreted at the general assembly this time and we (Umno Youth) have already said that we have a benchmark as our political KPI (Key Performance Indicators) and the president wants us to go down on the ground as a new approach.

"The changes are not only in terms of amendment, spirit, but in terms of our approach to the people," he said.

Khairy, who was also impressed with the phrase "Umno must be the people's champion", said the party must eliminate the negative perception that politics was a game of numbers.

Umno Supreme Council member and former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said the conclusion from the general assembly was that the Prime Minister wanted Umno to rise up again.

"Allah has given us the chance after we have fallen sick for quite a long time for us to recover and for that we must be prepared to change," he said.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman believed that with the spirit shown by the delegates at the general assembly this time, Umno would be able to regain its glory and regain the states that it had lost to the opposition.

He said it was time for Umno members to interpret the aspiration of the top leadership who wanted to close ranks and serve with sincerity and himility.
