KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Embattled MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the 60-year-old party was capable of solving its own problems through its own internal mechanism, hinting that he did not want any "help" from outside.
Saying that the party was now at a crossroad, he also assured that he would do what needed to be done in the best interest of the party.
In a three-paragraph statement in his blog today, the Transport Minister who is on a four-day leave since Sunday said the current crisis in MCA was typical of any organisation that called for change and reforms, particularly the eradication of unacceptable and decadent practices.
"We can either change or carry on at our own peril. We have to take stock of what has happened and learn our past lessons. Ultimately, we hope the party will emerge wiser and more mature," he added.
Yesterday, former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggested that the Barisan Nasional leadership intervene and help solve the party's crisis.
At the MCA's extraordinary general meeting (EGM) last Saturday, 1,155 of the 2,304 central delegates passed a vote of no-confidence on Ong.
The EGM also passed a resolution to reinstate suspended Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek's membership albeit rejecting the motion to restore him as the party's No. 2.
Following that, the party's powerful central committee (CC) will meet this Thursday to discuss the latest development and the next course of action for the party.
Ong also said that the party must stay united "as it gets back on track to forge forward with greater confidence after the dust settles down".
He also thanked party supporters and Malaysians in general for the concern they had shown him after the EGM.
"Your words of support and encouragement have given me great comfort. Rest assured I will do what needs to be done in the best interest of the party," he said.
