No Criminal Elements In Gnanapragasam's Death

SUBANG, June 15 (Bernama) -- The autopsy on A.Gnanapragasam, the housebreaking suspect who died in Damansara Damai police lockup yesterday confirmed that there were no criminal elements involved.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said Monday night the cause of Gnanapragasam's death was "toxaemia secondary to spontaneous peritonitis" or blood poisoning due to a bacteria infection in the intestines.

He said the autopsy at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMCC) at noon yesterday was done by pathologist Dr Prashant Smberkar.

Gnanapragasam who was detained on Wednesday was found dead yesterday morning in the cell toilet by a lockup guard.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Arjunaidi Mohammed said the autopsy did not trace any bruises or injuries on the body.

"As such, we appeal to the public not to believe rumours. We will continue to investigate the case," he told Bernama at Subang Bestari tonight.

He said the autopsy result on Gnanapragasam's cause of death was issued by UUMC at about 7.30pm
